Fixed and moving parts

Can You Change Your BaZi?

The question usually comes with a hidden second half: if it can be changed, how much does a service charge. This page answers the first half with arithmetic and declines the second.

What is fixed

The example chart is 1985-07-04 12:00, male: 乙丑 Yi Chou · 壬午 Ren Wu · 甲辰 Jia Chen · 庚午 Geng Wu. Those eight characters are fixed by the birth moment; nothing that happens afterwards edits them:

What moves: luck pillars and the annual pillar

Above the four pillars sits a second time structure; this site computes 10 steps of it. The example chart runs Backward (ni pai) (yin-stem year (乙) + male → sequence runs backward), starting at 9y 5m 20d:

This layer is the part that moves — and it is not optional either. The direction is fixed by the year stem's polarity and the gender, and the annual pillar by the calendar year. What changes is which step you are standing in, not which one you may pick.

What this site does not do

Two traditional claims, labelled as such

The classical literature does contain claims that fate can be changed, roughly of two kinds: that accumulated good conduct changes circumstances, and that dwelling environment and names can adjust them. Neither can be checked by this engine — they produce no recomputable number. This site labels them as traditional readings, neither endorsing nor mocking them. The only thing this page can do is separate fixed from moving: the pillars are fixed; where you stand on the timeline is not.

What this site claims

A note on what this page deliberately does not do: the popular versions of this material assign a fixed personality to each term — one character per branch, one destiny per stage. This site rejects that framing. What is published here is a structural position: which element sits where, on what kind of ground, with which tenants inside. The same term reads differently under a different month command, and no meaningful judgement exists without the other characters of the chart. Where the tradition offers a reading it is labelled as the tradition's; this site's own contribution is that every number and term on this page is computed, versioned and checkable against the methodology page.

Frequently asked

These are the questions specific to this page; broader conventions live on the methodology page.

Can a name change or a lucky object alter the chart?
Not the chart itself — nothing edits the eight characters. Whether such things alter a life is not a computable claim, and this site does not make it.
Why do the luck pillars start at different ages?
The start age converts the distance between the birth moment and the adjacent solar node into years, months and days. It follows from the calendar, not from a choice.
Do two people born the same moment share a reading?
They share the chart exactly, and share the luck-pillar sequence if the gender is the same. What they do not share is anything the chart cannot contain — which is most of what happens.
Is there anything on the chart I could choose?
No. Every element is derived from the birth moment, the gender and the calendar. The choices are in how you read it, and those rules are published.
