The twelve earthly branches

Branches are the positional system of ba zi: they set the month, the hour and the direction, and they carry the hidden stems and the relations between positions. This page lays out every structural fact of all twelve, each with its own page — every number here is computed by the same engine.

All twelve at a glance

Open any branch for its full page: hidden stems, harmony and clash, punishment, trine and meeting, the ten-stem stage table, and the five pillars that contain it.

The six yang branches (Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu)

The six yin branches (Chou, Mao, Si, Wei, You, Hai)

Computed distributions

The same data read a few different ways shows the skeleton of the system:

ElementsWood 2 · Fire 2 · Earth 4 · Metal 2 · Water 2 — Earth takes four branches (the four tombs Chen, Wei, Xu, Chou); the other four elements take two each
Polarity6 yang, 6 yin — which is why a yang branch only ever pairs with yang stems and a yin branch with yin stems, so only 60 of the 120 stem-branch combinations exist
Monthsthe Yin branch opens the first month, then forward in order; Zi is the 11th and Chou the 12th — the month pillar changes at the solar term, not at the new moon
Hoursthe Zi hour starts at 23:00–01:00; two hours per branch, twelve branches covering the full day

The six clashes (six positions apart)

The rule is plain: count six positions from any branch and you have its clash. The trines and meetings are fixed membership tables the same way.

The six harmonies (and what they combine into)

The four trines

In every trine, the three branches are exactly the Birth, Prosperity and Tomb positions of that element's yang stem — the trine table and the twelve-stage table corroborate each other.

The four seasonal meetings

Find your day branch

The birth date alone is enough. The day branch is the second character of the day pillar — the spouse palace.

Frequently asked

What are the twelve earthly branches?
The twelve positions Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. They set the month (the Yin branch opens the first month), the hour (the Zi hour begins at 23:00) and the direction, and each carries one to three hidden stems. The year, month, day and hour branches of a chart are just four landings among these twelve.
Does a clash always mean something bad?
No. A clash is the structural fact that two branches sit six positions apart; the tradition uses it to describe movement and pull, not to score fortune. This site publishes the relation and stops there — it does not read a clash as bad or a combination as good.
How do the trines relate to the twelve stages?
In every trine, the three branches are exactly the Birth, Prosperity and Tomb positions of that element's yang stem. The water trine Shen-Zi-Chen, for instance, is where Ren is born (Shen), peaks (Zi) and is buried (Chen). Two tables corroborating each other — check them side by side on the twelve-stages pages.
Why are there only sixty combinations?
When the ten stems pair with the twelve branches, only same-polarity pairs exist: a yang stem pairs with a yang branch (Jia-Zi, Bing-Yin and so on) and a yin stem with a yin branch. So of the 120 possible writings, only 60 occur in the sixty-cycle.
Which animal belongs to each branch?
Zi Rat, Chou Ox, Yin Tiger, Mao Rabbit, Chen Dragon, Si Snake, Wu Horse, Wei Goat, Shen Monkey, You Rooster, Xu Dog, Hai Pig. The animal is one field on each branch page here, not the whole of it.
