2026 is widely called a Fire Horse year, and the phrase has an exact meaning: the Fire Horse is the year whose pillar is 丙午 — Bing, yang fire, over Wu, the Horse, whose own element is also fire. Both characters burn, hence the name. It is not a name for Horse years in general: between 1900 and 2043 there are twelve Horse years, and only three of them carry the pillar 丙午 — 1906, 1966, 2026. The next is 2086. This page draws that distinction with checkable data.

From 1900 to 2043 the years whose branch is Wu (Horse) number 12; all are listed below with their year pillar computed by the engine. A Horse year is a Fire Horse year only when its stem is Bing — three rows qualify. Stem distribution: 丙×3, 戊×3, 庚×2, 壬×2, 甲×2.
| Calendar year | Year pillar | Fire Horse? |
|---|---|---|
| 1906 | 丙午 (Bing Wu) | 丙午 (Fire Horse) |
| 1918 | 戊午 (Wu Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 1930 | 庚午 (Geng Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 1942 | 壬午 (Ren Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 1954 | 甲午 (Jia Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 1966 | 丙午 (Bing Wu) | 丙午 (Fire Horse) |
| 1978 | 戊午 (Wu Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 1990 | 庚午 (Geng Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 2002 | 壬午 (Ren Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 2014 | 甲午 (Jia Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
| 2026 | 丙午 (Bing Wu) | 丙午 (Fire Horse) |
| 2038 | 戊午 (Wu Wu) | no (stem is not Bing) |
The last year with the pillar 丙午 was 1966, sixty years on either side — the stem cycle runs ten, the branch twelve, and they meet again at sixty. Both lichun instants come from the fixed table:
| 2026 lichun | 2026-02-04 04:02 (Beijing time) |
|---|---|
| 1966 lichun | 1966-02-04 14:37 (Beijing time) |
| Position in the sixty-cycle | number 43 of 60 (identical both times) |
The nayin of 丙午 is 天河水 (Celestial River Water, Celestial River Water). "Fire Horse" describes the elements of the two characters; the sixty-cycle also carries an independent nayin system, under which Bing Wu and Ding Wei are both water. The two systems answer different questions, and this site prints both without reconciling them — an instance of stating school differences rather than picking one quietly.
When the year branch matches the animal's branch that is zhi tai sui (own year, ben ming nian), and Wu is one of the four self-punishing branches (Chen, Wu, You, Hai) — so people born in Horse years stand in both the own-year and the punishment relation in 2026. Both verdicts are fixed-table facts, unrelated to whether the year treats anyone well. The per-animal page carries the full table.
